Tjong A Fie was a key figure in the development of Medan during the Dutch colonial period, widely recognized for his contributions to social and religious infrastructure. He supported the construction of various public facilities, including places of worship such as Chinese temples—among them Kwan Ti Kong and Kwan Im—as well as the Gang Bengkok Mosque, reflecting the city’s multicultural harmony. In addition, he contributed to the development of social institutions such as hospitals and schools that served the wider community.

Beyond his role in development, he was also a prominent businessman and leader of the Chinese community, holding the position of Major of the Chinese. This role placed him as an intermediary between the colonial government, the Sultanate of Deli, and Medan’s diverse society, contributing to social stability and urban growth.

His legacy is reflected not only in physical structures, but also in the enduring values of tolerance, inclusivity, and social responsibility that continue to shape Medan today.
