Tjong Yong Hian

Tjong Yong Hian was an important figure in the early development of Medan and played a significant role in the life of Tjong A Fie. As the elder brother and pioneer, he arrived in Deli earlier and laid the foundation for his younger brother’s journey in building a life and business in the region.

Through the networks and experience he had established, Tjong Yong Hian introduced Tjong A Fie to the local business environment and influential figures in Deli. This connection became a crucial starting point that enabled Tjong A Fie to grow into a prominent businessman and community leader.

As a leader of the Chinese community holding the position of Captain of the Chinese, Tjong Yong Hian acted as an intermediary between the colonial government, the Sultanate of Deli, and the wider society. His role contributed to social stability and created an environment that supported the growth of the next generation, including Tjong A Fie.

Beyond leadership, he was also involved in various business activities and early development efforts in the Deli region. His contributions helped establish the economic and social foundations of Medan, which were later expanded upon by Tjong A Fie.

As a pioneer, Tjong Yong Hian not only shaped the direction of the Chinese community in Medan, but also left a lasting influence on Tjong A Fie’s journey and achievements. His legacy is reflected in their close relationship and in the city they helped build together.
